The Lithuanian youth actively observe the International Anti-Corruption Day

On December 9, with the World observing the International Anti-Corruption Day proclaimed by the United Nations, attention is drawn to corruption problem, call for its public intolerance. Throughout the whole week, the Lithuanian youth participate in various events aimed at discussing combat against corruption.

Round table discussion “Corruption Prevention through the Community Education” took place in Šiauliai University (ŠU) on December 9. Anti-corruption events and creative competitions are organized by general education schools and gymnasia of Klaipėda, Šilutė, Rietavas, Tauragė, Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Pasvalys, Anykščiai, Kėdainiai, Utena, Trakai, Alytus cities and districts.

On December 6-10, officials of STT Kaunas Department in cooperation with the Education Division of the Culture and Education Department of Kaunas City Municipality Administration invited schools of Kaunas city to contribute to anti-corruption initiatives and organize pupil discussions, seminars on harm of corruption and means of resisting it, as well as to prepare subject posters, songs, performances or essay competitions on the request of school communities.


The anti-corruption pupil education workgroup consisting of representatives of the Education Division, STT Kaunas Department and Anti-Corruption Commission of Kaunas City Municipality is organizing debate competition “Corruption in the Modern Society” for pupils of Kaunas general education schools. According to the organizers, the objective of debates is not only to analyse corruption phenomena and discuss them but also to discuss forms of corruption which are most commonly faced by young people, to identify motives and values enabling an individual to resist this phenomenon.

Debates (in accordance with Karl Popper debate programme structure) started on December 6. 3-member teams are evaluated by two impartial panels of judges. After the first round, 6 best teams will advance to the final to struggle on December 15 in the big hall of Kaunas City Municipality.  The competition winners will be awarded by the Anti-Corruption Commission of Kaunas City Municipality and receive small gifts from STT.

Kaunas city schools are traditionally most active participants in Lithuania – over 50 secondary school and gymnasia are among participants.
