Discussion on the medical practitioners’ declaration of assets

This week Special Investigation Service (STT) of the Republic of Lithuania held the discussion with the Union of Lithuanian Doctors, Lithuanian Trade Union of Health Care Employees, Ministry of Health and State Tax Inspectorate under the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania on the STT’ suggestion that physicians and health care practitioners should declare their assets and publish these declarations.

The majority of participants agreed that doctors providing health care services and their family members should declare their assets.

STT will evaluate the comments provided by the stakeholders and decide on the improvement of the draft amendments to the law.

STT submitted the proposal for obliging physicians to declare their assets, since the findings of the Global Corruption Barometer 2013 prove that health care system is one of the most corruption-prone areas in Lithuania. Thirty-five percent of the survey respondents who used health care services over the past 12 months have given a bribe.
