Klaipėda Regional Court has issued a decision in foreign bribery case and found guilty two persons: former Director of infrastructure of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority G. Z. and Latvian citizen G. K., a former Latvian construction company's board Chairman.
The Court sentenced G. Z. to two years and 5 month imprisonment with a suspended term of two years and prohibited work in public sector for two years. Latvian citizen is imposed on EUR 9 500 fine. Moreover, the watch, received as a bribe, and EUR 5 000 were confiscated.
The Lithuanian Special Investigation Service (STT), in co-operation with the Latvian Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB), launched pre-trial investigation in June 2016. The data obtained by STT suggested that G. K., representing a Latvian company that won several construction tenders announced by the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, the value of which amounts to several million Euro, paid bribes to G. Z. in several ‘instalments’ for a value exceeding 250 minimum subsistence levels in exchange for decisions made by the Seaport Authority for the benefit of the Latvian company.
Seeking Lithuania‘s objective to become a member of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation, the specialised anti-corruption agency, STT, is building its co-operation with the specialised anti-corruption bodies of other countries. On 26 January 2017, the OECD Council agreed to invite Lithuania to join the Working Group on Bribery in International Business Transactions.
